This guy only came out in the snow to eat. The rest of the day, he stayed in his stall. We always go back and forth on putting a blanket on him. Mac cannot stand a blanket. Every time we put one on, when we come up to check on him, the blanket is half on him and half dragging the ground. As he has aged like a fine wine, he is less patient with the blanket. The worry now is he trips and hurts himself trying to get the blanket off.

After I run through all the scenarios of the blanket or no blanket, I remind myself of all the wild horses out west who somehow make it without human intervention. While Mac is fed 2-3 times a day and wild horses are not, his coat is made to protect him and I now just know, no blanket is safer for him and just no need to worry. He seems much happier now that there is never an attempt to put a blanket on him.

Something pretty unique happened in our pastures yesterday with the snow. Our entire yard was covered with at least 4-5” of snow when we went up to check on chicks. We turned the corner of the Big House-which also had about 4-5” of snow and there were grass pastures with hardly any snow. Then it dawned on us, our pastures are so dense that they can take on more water than the average yard. It was not until almost 10 pm that snow started to sit on top of our pastures.
